Prism Shift

Prism Shift is a puzzle game centered around a dynamic light beam mechanic, where players interact with crystals to unlock new paths and uncover hidden areas. This project focuses on using light beams to create progression-based challenges that engage players with spatial reasoning and problem-solving.

Platform | PC
Playtime | 5-10 Minutes

Engine | Unreal Engine 5
Duration | February 2024

Playtime | 5-10 Minutes
Roles | Game Designer, Level Designer

Responsibilities
  • Designed and implemented the core light beam mechanics using Unreal Engine Blueprint to create interactive and engaging puzzle gameplay.

  • Developed a dynamic light beam that could be activated and rotated via switches, forming the foundation of player-driven puzzles.

  • Created reflective objects capable of altering the light beam’s path at precise angles to reach designated targets, enhancing puzzle complexity.

  • Designed and implemented triggers that responded to correct beam alignment, unlocking new areas by activating doors, moving bridges, and revealing hidden pathways.

  • Integrated visual feedback, such as beam glow and reflection effects, to intuitively guide players through puzzles and signify successful actions.

  • Tuned the responsiveness of the beam system and calibrated reflection angles for seamless, player-driven interactions, ensuring consistent feedback and puzzle clarity.

LIGHT BEAM MECHANIC – BUILDING INTERACTIVITY

The core of Prism Shift revolves around a light beam mechanic where players must rotate and position light beams to advance. Inspired by environmental puzzle games, I designed a system that allowed players to manipulate crystals with ease and visual clarity, prioritizing user-friendly interaction through switches.

Process Outline:

  • Activation System: Developed an intuitive activation mechanism where players use switches to turn light beams on and off, offering a clear sense of control over the environment.

  • Beam Reflection: Built objects with reflective surfaces to accurately redirect light at precise angles, rewarding players for experimenting with beam direction to unlock new paths.

  • Progression Triggers: Designed doors, moving bridges, and secret platforms to respond to light beams, each element expanding the puzzle scope as players unlock new areas.

Wrap Up

Prism Shift allowed me to refine my skills in creating interactive puzzle mechanics that blend seamlessly into level design, providing an immersive and rewarding experience for players as they solve light-based puzzles to unlock new areas and progress through the game.
